A 10-15 minute walk from Bailèn 41 brings you to the newly renovated and just re-opened Casa Amatller, the modernista palace of chocolate magnate, world traveler, photographer, and collector Antoni Amatller designed by renowned Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.The house and its neighbors - Casa Batlló, Casa Lleó-Morera, and Casa Mullera - constitute the most important buildings in Barcelona's famous Illa de la Discòrdia ("Block of Discord"),
so-called because of their competing displays.Until recently, visitors could view only the ground floor of Casa Amatller. Now, after five years of painstaking work, the public can visit most of the entire house, including the personal quarters of Antoni and his daughter Teresa with their original furnishings and decorations.
Visits are by guided tour only. Currently English language tours are offered twice daily (Sunday-Saturday), at 11 am and 3 or 3:30 pm (depending on the season). While the webpage for the house presents information in Catalan only, there is an English-language form for purchasing tickets on-line.Casa Amatller also now features a lovely cafe with terrace and a gift shop selling - what else? - chocolates still produced under the Amatller name and in distinctive modernist packaging.
From Bailèn 41, take Gran Via to Passeig de Gràcia, cross the street, turn right and go up 2 blocks. You can't miss it!
